Sigourney Weaver could return as a digitally de-aged Ellen Ripley for an "Alien" prequel.

When asked in an exclusive interview with Empire magazine if fans could see a younger Ripley during a possible series of movies that will eventually catch up with the storyline of the hit 1979 science fiction thriller, director Ridley Scott gave an affirmative response.

"You could do that," he said, according to the Postmedia Network.

In a previous interview, Scott gave the smallest of hints about bringing the popular Ripley character alive through computer generated images sometime during his Alien prequels.

"Alien: Covenant," scheduled to hit theaters May 19, is a sequel to "Prometheus," with both storylines set before the original "Alien."

"What we did really well on 'Prometheus,' considering that it was a ground zero idea that was starting all over again, was I discovered that people do have an appetite for the alien and what he means and his evolution – the egg, the face-hugger, the chest-burster as we call them," Ridley told the Sydney Morning Herald last month.

"People still want to see it. So I return to a little bit of that but not wholeheartedly; there's a lot in here which is new as well," he added.

Scott told the Morning Herald that he believes that there are still plenty of stories to tell, such as how the alien creature was created and why.

"If you really want a franchise, I can keep cranking it for another six," Scott told the Australian newspaper. "I'm not going to close it down again. No way."

Scott had moved away from the "Alien" franchise after the original. James Cameron signed on to direct its sequel "Aliens" in 1986, followed by David Fincher's "Alien 3" in 1992, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's "Alien: Resurrection" in 1997, noted the Morning Herald.

Weaver starred in the original "Alien" and the three following sequels.
